I have been away a bit over the last month – Sydney for a few days for a work trip, then six days at our family holiday house at Killcare. Which means not a lot has been brewing in my kitchen over that time. There have been a few things…
In my March kitchen…
… a 2002 bottle of Langmeil Riesling that should have been opened and enjoyed about 6-7 years ago. The first holiday The Accountant and I took together was a couple of weeks in South Australia. We blew our wine budget in the first wine region we went to – the Clare Valley. I had never been a Riesling lover until that trip. It converted me for life. Fortunately we had a little extra in the budget for when we made it to the Barossa!
Not quite in my kitchen…
… this cheeky bush turkey. Anyone who knows me knows how much I loathe these creatures. This is at Killcare, and because we aren’t there year round, I’m dreading the day I arrive and discover they have set up home. So far so good!
In my kitchen…
… a green smoothie. I don’t really know who I am. I’m doing a bit of a cleanse over the next few weeks as later in March I’m going on holiday for a while. Figured I should try and get into a few good habits before I go. This one has spinach, cucumber, apple, cashews, mint, lemon, ginger and avocado.
… still on my healthy eating – I’m making a concerted effort to eat at least five serves of veg a day. These salads in a bowl are an easy way of getting three of them in. This one has lettuce, capsicum, tomato, avocado, cucumber, carrot, peptia, sunflower seeds, leftover roast chook and some cultured veg.
… is what I’m reading this week. Where is Daniel? is a story that most Australians would sadly be familiar with. It tells the story of the investigation into the disappearance and recovery of Sunshine Coast boy Daniel Morcombe. It’s incredibly compelling and unutterably sad. I have to keep remembering it’s a true story. Heartbreaking.
So that’s me for this month. If you want to read what’s in other kitchens around the world, head over to Celia’s wonderful blog, Fig Jam and Lime Cordial, for links to them all.
That green smoothie looks amazing, Mel! I always have good intentions about making similar healthy drinks, but somehow I never seem to get around to it …
I’m definitely not a total convert Christine, but I must say I’m enjoying them. I do miss having eggs for breakfast though.
I keep thinking about making tentative efforts to join the green smoothie craze. However I suspect I shall cheat and use matcha in mine as the spinach, kale and other green veg ones just don’t taste good to me!
Kavey (first time IMKer this month)
Pick the right green veg and you can’t taste it Kavey. Spinach in a smoothie has no flavour (I was skeptical too).
Mel, salads in a bowl are such a great way to get in your ‘5 a day’, and they make for a colourful lunch too! cheers, Kirsty
green smoothie? good work. i was having smoothies till my blender blew up and threw everything around the kitchen. i must get another one soon. i quite like our bush turkeys. they are such cheeky boys. of course it means we have no garden to speak of:) yes so sad for the morecombes. i think of them often. so sad..
I have finally got around to the IMK post for march, just in time to start again for April! Your green smoothie looks great as does your salad, keep going with the health kick you will feel so much better! Thanks for sharing! Liz x
