I had been wanting to eat at Julius Pizzeria since I first heard the exciting news that Beccofino, maker of the best pizza in Brisbane, was opening a restaurant on my side of the river. Three cheers!
Mr Nearly-46* and I decided to check it out for part two of date night. Part one was an early movie – The Imitation Game. Sensational. One of the best movies either of us have seen in a really long time. I’m still thinking about it.
Anyway, back to Julius. They don’t take bookings after 6pm so we had to wait for about 20 minutes. No problem. Once we were seated service was friendly and quick, and our pizzas arrived ridiculously quickly. Thankfully as I was STARVING! Pizza verdict – as good as Beccofino. Yes, I’ll be back. Probably often.
The only drawback was the noise. Lots of hard surfaces made the sound of chatter from a full restaurant and busy bar and kitchen bounce around. Which meant it was hard for us to chat, as we had to shout. Which I didn’t really want to do.
However, what wasn’t hard was listening to the conversation of the younger couple next to us. As I couldn’t hear Mr Nearly-46 talk to me, I shamelessly eavesdropped on their conversation. And as we both later concluded, if it wasn’t their first date, it can’t have been more than their third or fourth.
They talked a lot about travel – he wants to go to New Zealand, she loves New York. It was hard not to interject to tell Ms 22 “ME TOO! I LOVE NEW YORK!!”. And to tell Mr Nearly-30 all the places he should definitely visit in New Zealand and how he simply MUST have a burger at Fergburger in Queenstown.
Seriously. If Beccofino/Julius make the best pizza I’ve eaten in Brisbane, Fergburger makes the best burger I have ever eaten in New Zealand. And maybe the best anywhere. Maybe…
Sadly I suspect they may not have a future as I just don’t think he was that into her. How do I know you ask? Well, at one stage she said how she would love to visit a wine region and perhaps spend a weekend there. His response? “Oh you really should do that one day”.
Sigh.
My heart broke a little for her.

* on a whole other note, I’m not sure what to call my beloved. I’m over hubby (as technically he isn’t), he isn’t always my eating buddy, and I probably shouldn’t call him Mr Grumpy, even though he quite often is. Which he believes is largely a reflection of being nearly 46. I probably also shouldn’t publicly and frequently call him sugar lips or honey buns (both of which he has – sorry, probably TMI…). So I may chop and change a bit. Feel feel to share your thoughts 🙂

Well Mel, for some reason I thought you lived on the north side of the river!
Pizza’s my fave, but I deny myself the pleasure (I’m usually disappointed in most, even gourmet pizzerias). My daughter has established herself as the best pizza ‘cook in my books’, excuse the pun! But day 14 has just sunk in on your discipline to blog each day! I was going to recommend Putia Pure Food at Banyo, & I still would, but I’ve decided to blog about it too. Last night, I was thinking how a year ago, we messaged about meeting up, & you were at the early stage of going through your melanoma challenge. Good health to you Mel.

Haha! I did live north side when I first moved to Brisbane, but then bought a house south side. I haven’t been to Putia yet, but it’s high on my list. It’s rare I blog reviews, and I probably wouldn’t call this chat about Julius a review in the technical sense!

I wasn’t thinking it as a review either. I’ll have to get savvy at the difference in blogging. Mmm, but I guess I love telling people about my yummiest eats as well! 🙂
