So much for saying my blogging mojo was returning! Even after a weekend at ProBlogger Event last week! Thank goodness for Celia’s In my kitchen monthly roundup – a post I love to write.
In my September kitchen…
… has been some Sunday baking. I made these very moreish little pecan and chocolate shortbreads yesterday, as well as a Middle Eastern orange muffins (with added chocolate chips). Easy options for morning tea for the next week or so.
In my kitchen…
… was a pot of chicken, veg, herbs, spices and a good glug of apple cider vinegar, that was on its way to becoming chicken bone broth. I simmer the chicken for about 90 minutes, then strip off the meat for other meals. The carcass, bones and skin all go back in the pot with a couple of other carcasses and 3-4 chicken feet. I simmer for 24 hours then strain it all – the crazy chickens get the carrot pieces and the broth is used for soups and casseroles and whatever else calls for chicken stock over the next week or so. I try and always have some in the fridge or freezer, as it makes a very flavoursome and gut-healthy base for many quick and simple meals.
In my kitchen…
… is this gorgeous book that I won in a blog competition that Emma from The Scoop on Nutrition ran a few weeks ago. I love Mediterranean food and was absolutely thrilled to win! Now I just need to find some time to read it and cook a few things!
In my kitchen…
… is this little book that came to my attention via a science communicators list I’m on . My science geeky side loves the chemistry that makes recipes come together and so I just had to buy this book. It’s also put together by fellow science communicator and ex-My Kitchen Rules contestants Emma and Andrew. I must confess when I met Emma at a conference earlier this year I had NO IDEA who she was… Sorry Emma!
Thankfully NOT in my kitchen…
… is this VERY UGLY cane toad. I did emit a big squeal when I saw it – a good two months before I was ready to. Ugly creatures. Thankfully the girls didn’t see it and want it for afternoon tea.
In my kitchen…
… was this roast rack of lamb. I’ve been away a bit lately and not cooked many dinners – those I have cobbled together have mostly been roasts or something and roast veg or salad. Quick and simple. Roast lamb is a favourite here.
In my kitchen…
… is another roast! A chicken this time. Covered liberally in a lemon and herb pepper from the Herbies* range. Divine. The carcass from this chook went into the chicken broth above – soooo good!
What’s in your September kitchen? And what is your favourite quick and easy meal to make when you’re busy??
The monthly roundup is hosted by Celia’s from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial – check out her blog to see a few other kitchens.

Shortbread… I love shortbread and yours looks so moreish! Thanks for a wonderful IMK post!
Those pecan and chocolate chip biscuits look divine. I would love to get my hands on those cook books. My cat brought a frog home a couple of weeks back. Luckily I was able to rescue the frog. Your lamb looks delicious. Emma.
thanks Emma! Frogs are cute – cane toads are not. Glad yours was safe 🙂
yum I love roast chook not so keen on lamb. oh yes toads are horrible. our puppy tried to eat a couple which required emergency trips to the vet. yuk!
I do like the look of that lemon & herb pepper. Looks fantastic. I also try to have homemade chicken stock on hand. I need to make a new batch, so thanks for the reminder. Thanks for sharing.
If I’m really busy, I toss a couple of baked potatoes in the combi oven on microwave and convection, take the steak out of the refrigerator and steam some broccoli. Dinner on the table in 20 minutes.
I could certainly tuck in to that lamb rack or chicken!
steak, greens and baked potato are a favourite here too Maureen x
Boo to the cane toad! I hope they never make it to Sydney! I love your big pot of chicken soup – you’ve reminded me that I’m getting short on stock in the freezer. Will have to make more, as I don’t think I could ever go back to bought stock again! Thanks for the great book tips – the science one looks particularly interesting! x
Thanks Celia, the stock is divine. Like you, I can’t go back to store bought.
G’day and thanks for this month’s kitchen view too!
I can almost smell your lamb and chicken from here, would love a cookie and wonder if it is true if I kissed your frog! lol
Cheers! Joanne
No Joanne DON’T KISS IT!! It’s a toad not a frog!!
Ah blogging mojo – I think mine is hiding in the back of the fridge somewhere but I always love doing the IMK post! Loving the new cookbooks and wish I had a decent freezer to store lots of stock. Oh, and your shortbread mention sent me straight to the kitchen to make cookies * shakes fist* ;D Thanks for the peek!
Think I may have to get some spices from Herbies, that chicken looks really good! How’s the Mediterranean Diet cookbook? I’m very interested in knowing a bit about it before I buy it. Thanks for a peek inside IMK and it’s nice meeting you
