Typhoon Haiyan blew through the Philippines last week leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Many cities and towns were destroyed. Thousands of people were killed, tens of thousands are homeless.
My Filipino mother-in-law tells me that Tacloban was one of the most beautiful places in the country. As it is the home town of Imelda Marcos, it became very developed during Marcos’ reign. Fortunately my mother-in-law’s immediate family are safe, as they do not live in the affected regions.
So what can we do?
Olivier Boudon, Owner/Chef of local Auchenflower French Restaurant SPROUT, is hosting a fund-raising dinner on Wednesday 27 November 2013.
He has also linked with local Filipino Letty Desacola, who has lost 13 of her family members in this tragedy. Letty has found a private sponsor to send 4 containers across to the Philippines.
Sprout is helping in two ways:
- acting as a drop off point for donations to go in the containers
- hosting a fund raising dinner to raise money to get the containers off the dock in Manilla and to transport them to the affected villages.
Donations needed include:
- canned food
- clean clothes
- thongs and light sandals
- toiletries for men, women and children – think toothbrushes, toothpaste, tampons/pads, deodorant, soap etc
- baby items such as nappies, wet wipes, towels.
The dinner is being generously supported by a number of food and wine companies, ensuring that ALL monies from the sale of tickets will go directly to the fundraising appeal. Thanks to:
- Reef & Beef
- France Gourmet
- City Oysters
- Food and Wine Concept
- exclusivewinesdirect.com.au
Tickets are $90 each – please book directly with Sprout by calling 3870 3030.
Many, many thanks, to you Mel and your colleagues for your compassionate hearts. All the help that the victims can get in the Philippines will alleviate their tremendous suffering. We are in the process of preparing to hold a fund-raising event in Maryborough also. By the way, I feel so honoured being mentioned in your promotion about your fund-raising dinner. Love to you and Shaun.
