In my kitchen…
… is a whole gourmet pack of beautiful organic lamb from Silverwood Organics. This farm is based at Longreach in Central West Queensland and they deliver once a month to Brisbane and other parts of South East Queensland. There are various size packs you can order, but this is our favourite. It comes with a few roasts, different cuts of chops, mince, fillets, shanks and some bones to make a beautiful bone broth. It’s about 17-19kg of meat and it will last us about six months. Excellent value. Not to mention the best lamb I’ve ever tasted.
In my kitchen…
… are the cutest little measuring spoons. I bought these from the Paula Deen store in Savannah, GA when we were in the USA in August. I love the measuring descriptions – I hadn’t previously been sure just how much a “tad” was! ๐
In my kitchen…
… is a jar of garlic salt. Yep. Garlic salt. Not something I would normally keep in my kitchen, but we are at Killcare again and this is in the pantry. Dad loved this stuff, and bought this mega-jar of it after mum died – like me, she refused to keep it in the kitchen. It’s a guilty pleasure and is always used on chicken pieces we BBQ when we are here.
In my kitchen…
… was a Sara Lee chocolate cake. Some girlfriends came for lunch on the weekend and one of them brought this. It was a shame she didn’t bring two. Or even three. The Sara Lee factory was practically down the road from where I grew up and I’ve always had a huge fondness for their chocolate cake. Served with strawberries and some cream, it was the perfect dessert for a lazy Sunday lunch. The splayds in the photo were mum and dad’s – I think they were a wedding present. I love them!
For my non-Australian readers, a splayd is a spoon, fork and knife all in one. They are iconically Australian, and invented by some clever-clogs in the 1940s. If anyone is looking to buy me a pressie, this would be a good one (hint hint…).
In my kitchen…
… is a giant bottle of sunscreen. We’re at Killcare this week and spending lots of time outside and at the beach. The UV rate is quite high, even at 8am when we go for our first walk, so sunscreen is essential. Keeping it on the kitchen bench means no one forgets to slather it on.
In my kitchen…
… is a grow your own oyster mushroom kit. I was given this recently, a couple of days before driving to Killcare, so I packed it up and it came with us. We should be able to eat our first batch of mushrooms in the next few days. They are pink for October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month.
And thatโs my kitchen for October! Iโd love to see what is in yours tooย

We received 2boxes of Splayds for wedding presents in 1978. They lay in the cupboard for 20yrs untill I opened them & put them in the draws. I fell in love with them, alas the kids have lost my favourite eating utensils. I have 1 left, so I’m going to get another set if possible & hide them. Love all your sites! Wish I’d get my act together & follow suit!
Mel Kettle says
Thanks Monika! Aren’t splayds the greatest?
Lizzy (Good Things) says
Love the mushrooms Mel! Those little measuring spoons are great too, I’m sure we used to sell them in the cookware store.
Mel Kettle says
thanks Lizzy – they seem to be growing quite well which is surprising given the lack of care I am showing them!
Gina says
Mel, does the lamb come in those cryovac bags or did you vacuum seal them yourself?
Mel Kettle says
Hi Gina, it comes that way. I just split the mince and the lamb cubes into 500g in a few ziplock bags as they were large quantities.

When I was younger I used to have a Sara Lee cake for any special occasion. We used to buy giant slab versions from the factory. Oh I can taste it now!!! I’d love to grow my own mushrooms!
Mel Kettle says
where was the factory you went to Claire? Ours was at Lisarow on the NSW Central Coast but we rarely went there ๐
celia says
Mel, we adore our splayds! Ours were a wedding present as well, but I’ve since bought more – we use them so much that six just wasn’t enough! That mushroom kit looks fabulous – the one and only button mushroom kit we bought years ago was such a disaster that we’ve never revisted the idea, but you’ve inspired me to have a look at the new kits! ๐
Mel Kettle says
I’ve always been a bit skeptical of these mushroom kits too, but when I was asked if I wanted one, I thought why not! So far so good…

I mentioned Splaydes to my niece and she bought me a set. Hopefully your mention here will end up with you owning a set, as well!
I don’t like garlic salt unless it is for grilling and then it is necessary!
Great post- thanks for sharing!
( I knew what a tad was but was never sure about the smidgen! ๐
Mel Kettle says
I hope so Heidi! And aren’t those spoons so cute?
Tania @ The Cook's Pyjamas says
I love your spoons. I have a similar set but my set only has 3 spoons. Yours is better ๐ I love those oyster mushrooms. I did not realise you could get pink ones.
Mel Kettle says
Thanks Tania. I think the pink ones are special for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Joanne T Ferguson says
G’day Mel! Love your splayd and Silverwoods Organic Lamb too!
Thank you for this month’s lovely kitchen view!
Cheers! Joanne

Thanks Joanne, I’m a big fan of Silverwood Organics
Anne says
I’ve always been wary of mushroom kits too, but yours look good so maybe it’s something to try out. I love your measuring spoons and had no idea that a tad was so much more than a dash!
Wish we had enough sun to merit a giant bottle of sunscreen. It would take years to use that much.
Mel Kettle says
I doubt I would have tried a mushroom kit had I not been given one Anne. And yes, agree re a tad being so much!
Alisha says
I love this type of blog! Thankyou, very enjoyable ๐ ps. I love splaydes! I had no idea this was how they were spelt, I’ve always written splades!! Lol!
Mel Kettle says
Thanks Alisha – you should participate too! It’s a fun post to write every month
Jason says
Hi Mel, you’re right those spoons are great I use them for cheese, I never knew just a tad was a real measurement. Ahh Sara lee, I grew up in Gosford and remember trips to the factory around the time of school functions for the massive trays of cake. I wonder what it tastes like thawed?? lol
Mel Kettle says
HAHA! Pretty good thawed too Jason. I also grew up in Gosford – small world ๐
Lisa the Gourmet Wog says
I must be living under a rock, how have I never heard of Splaydes before?! Love it!! Also love pink mushrooms on tap, how brilliant! Great IMK post x
Mimi says
I want some splayds!
Therese McLennan says
There’s nothing like Sara’s chocolate cake to save the day ๐
Mel Kettle says
That’s for sure!
Glenda says
I also love Splaydes. I have two sets of the normal size and a smaller set for eating cake!
Jas@AbsolutelyJas says
Oh good old Sara Lee. I think every Aussie has a Sara Lee cake ‘memory’. Mine comes from my mother – her pregnancy craving when she was pregnant with my younger brother and sister (who are 8 and 6 years younger than me) was Sara Lee French cheesecake. I can’t eat it today as a result because we had so much of it ๐
giulia says
that grow your own mushroom kit is just awesome!!!
Christine says
I am another Splayd user especially the small ones for dessert. I know Peters of Kensington sell them for much the same price as I paid for them 20 years ago. I am hooked on growing mushrooms, there are even courses to do on growing them! Do you know where you can buy the pink kits? They would be a great addition to a pink ribbon fund raising stall.
Kim | a little lunch says
Mel, those Splayds are ingenious! I’ve seen “Sporks” here (spoon/fork), but never an all-in-one utensil trio. Your measuring spoons are so cute, too! I’m not sure how much a tad is either, but I suppose it depends on what you’re measuring. A tad of cayenne might have to be downsized to a smidgen. ๐
Fiona says
Not sure how I missed this post in the emails…anyway, I’m here now. Yes, I love a good Splayd. I have two sets – one from my 18th and a set from my 21st. Classic gifts from the 80s – no doubt I was supposed to put them in my ‘Glory Box’. A full size set and a cake set. I’ll look out for you in my op shop adventures though we both know they’re snapped up immediately.
