“Do you want me to vacuum today Mel?”
Um, seriously? Is that even a question? Of course I’m going to say YES PLEASE!
About ten years ago when The Accountant (aka Mr Nearly-46) and I first discussed moving in together I was a little apprehensive. Would I get stuck doing all the housework? I had seen the state of his townhouse. Particularly the bathrooms. And I was less than impressed. Needless to say I had a few conditions, the biggest of which was that we hire a cleaner and split the cost.
Fast forward a few years later, and while in between cleaners, The Accountant asked me how much we actually paid for this service. Um… I was kind of surprised the question hadn’t been asked sooner. Needless to say he didn’t really like my response.
Sensing an argument, he said if he cleaned the bathrooms and vacuumed every week could we save that money? I was a little skeptical (I hadn’t forgotten those bathrooms in his townhouse), and very tentatively said “OK”. Nearly seven years later and he still cleans the bathrooms and does the vacuuming every week. Without fail. He also does most of the laundry.
Sorry.
Am trying hard not to brag.
And yeah. I know I’m failing at that. 🙂
We think we have split the division of labour pretty well. He does lots of the housework, I occasionally dust and mop the floors, do most of the grocery shopping and all the meal planning and cooking. We sort of split doing the dishes. That job definitely depends on how many I’ve used during the day!
And while I might sometimes grumble about having to cook dinner yet again, and I might often want someone else just to make the decision about what we actually eat for dinner (the hardest part of cooking), I am always so grateful that The Accountant willingly and cheerfully does the bulk of the housework jobs I loathe the most.
How do you split the division of labour in your household?

In our place, he does most of the groceries, & cooks during the week. Oh & makes me coffee in the morning, breakfast on the weekends & lunch for Miss 16. I do the meal planning, cook on the weekends & clean the bathrooms. Miss 16 does the vacuuming. I think I have it pretty good.
That sounds good to me too!
