It’s that time again – time for you to all have a little squizz at what’s in my kitchen this month.
In my June kitchen…
… has been a lot of procrastibaking. This little apple and blueberry crumble was quickly whipped up the other night when I felt like doing a bit of baking, but wanted fairly instant eating. It probably took about 5 minutes from idea to oven. Yes, it tasted divine. Only problem was I didn’t make enough of the crumble part.
In my kitchen…
… is one of my favourite wines. It’s been a big month of study (hence the procrastibaking) as I’ve been frantically trying to finish my Master of Public Health. Everything was submitted last week (yay!), so I celebrated on the weekend with a beautiful bottle of Penfold’s 2004 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz. What made this more special is that it is one of few bottles of wine I have left that I inherited when my parents died a few years ago and it’s a wine we used to often drink as a family to celebrate special occasions. I don’t know whether I would have gone back to uni if they were still alive – their deaths really made me realise what’s important in life, and what my priorities are. Of course, now I’ve finished, I need to work out what to do with it!
In my kitchen…
… are these beautiful walnuts in their shell. I love nuts, and especially fresh nuts. I’ve been eating these freshly cracked, and also adding them to salads for a bit of crunch. YUM!
In my kitchen…
… are some of these absolutely beautiful tomatoes that I saw at my local farmers’ markets at Cannon Hill.
In my kitchen…
… are these pretty looking salad dressings that Red Kellys* sent me recently. I’m a bit sick of salad, so I think I’ll try them out on some baked potatoes or crispy chicken strips.
… are a heap of new and fabulous cookbooks. But it’s late and I can’t be bothered taking photos of them, so I’ll save them for another post – yep, cheeky I know!
And what’s in your June kitchen? The monthly roundup is hosted by Celia’s from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial – check our her blog to see a few other kitchens.

Hi Mel!
Hi Monika!
Congratulations on finishing your Masters and what a lovely idea to celebrate with a special bottle of wine in memory of your parents. They would be so proud of you.
Thanks Christine 🙂
Hmm, maybe you should consider the procrastibaking a part of the discipline rather than the other way around. Sometimes we need to switch off in order to reset or find our way back. It obviously worked for you; mission accomplished! 🙂
I love the idea of the crumble. I’m a home-style dessert lover since childhood.
Hope you’ll post pics of your crispy chicken strips. My oven has stopped working; do you do yours in the oven or can I tweak it some other way?
hehe Gina 🙂 I love crumble too. I usually do the chicken in the oven, but you could shallow fry it too.
Very glad to see you celebrating with such a fine South Australian drop, Mel! Congratulations, you should be very proud of yourself. And as for those dressings – I sometimes use those kinds of things as a sauce on grilled chook – just a thought.
thanks Amanda, having chicken salad for lunch today (using up leftovers!) so will give the sauce a try on that.
I really enjoy Kelly’s dressings… My favourite is the Lemon Myrtle… its lovely! My tomatoes are growing well, but not there yet! I can’t wait till they are ready! Thank you for showing you kitchen off this month! Liz x
I love lemon myrtle anything Liz – used to have a tree in the backyard and I certainly didn’t use it enough 🙁
Mel, it must have been brutal to lose both your folks, I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m sure they’d be very touched that you’re celebrating your academic achievements with such a splendid old bottle from their cellar. Congratulations on getting everything submitted!
Thanks Celia, it was certainly a very difficult time. And thanks 🙂
Mel – where are the walnuts from? Somewhere exotic or just the local shop? Love the markets, they’ve really settled in to a rythym. I know you meant you had to work out what to do with your Masters and not the bottle of wine ; )
I think I bought the walnuts from the Woodridge markets a couple of weeks ago Fiona
It is very fitting that you celebrated your Masters finish with this bottle of wine and very honourable that you went back to Uni. I am sure you will use your education ‘wisely’. I love your quick crumble, tomatoes and walnuts plus those amazing dressings. Congratulations on your huge achievement. 😀
hi Mel
i have never tried those tassie dressings. are they good? i like most things from Tasmania!:)
hi Sherry, the Romano dressing was pretty good, and my hubby loved the sweet chilli one (I’m not a fan of anything sweet chilli usually)
