In my February kitchen…
… are these gorgeous limes and mangoes that I swapped with my friend Kym for some eggs from our chickens. A lot of people have asked if they could buy our spare eggs (nah, would rather give them away), but Kym is one of the first to ask for a swap – yay and thanks!
In my kitchen…
… are these amazing goat pies. The Goat Pie Guy has been making and selling his pies in Brisbane since 2012. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to try one – well, actually I can, as they are so popular he has always been sold out when I have previously tried to buy one! I bought mine at the Love Your Local Markets Hawthorne Twilight markets on Friday night and had one for lunch yesterday. I bought 4 for $25 so might have to eat the last two for lunch over the next couple of days. YUM!
In my kitchen…
… is half a kilo of some of the best garlic I’ve ever tried. Local farmers were selling it at a reduced price as it had come off the bulb – how could I say no! Now what to do with it all… I’d love to hear any recipe ideas please!
In my kitchen…
… is my Lonely Planet guide to New Zealand because, yes, I’m GOING TO NEW ZEALAND!!!!!! AND I’M EXCITED!!! Hehe. I’m going in about 10 days and only for a short visit. Mostly I’m excited as I’ll be catching up with one of my mum’s dearest friends who lives in Canada but spends a couple of months in NZ every 2-3 years with her husband, mainly to escape the Canadian winters (but also because they are Kiwis). I went over for a few days when they visited three years ago and had such a wonderful time.
I will also have a few days in Auckland on my own, so if anyone has any suggestions of where to stay, where to eat and what to do, please leave a comment or get in touch!
In my kitchen…
… is this terrific little red box filled with glorious smelling spices turned up from Herbies a couple of weeks ago. While it’s part of their Valentine’s Day Dinner for Two promotion, they have many different varieties of kits available. All the kits come with recipes to use the spices within. I’m going to make the brownies with pine nuts and star anise (I KNOW!) to give hubby to take to work for their next office morning tea. And I think I’ll make him Provençal Chicken to have for dinner on Valentine’s Day when I’m gallivanting in Melbourne!
In my kitchen…
… is a lot of milk! After not drinking milk in any great quantity for over twenty years I’ve returned. And only because I have found a milk supplier that is local to me that produced unhomogenized milk that I can drink without feeling ill for hours after. Scenic Rim 4 Real Milk is produced in SE Queensland and sold through a range of retailers (I buy mine at my local IGA). Check it out – the flavour is amazing. I think I need to get cracking on baking those brownies!
What’s in your kitchen in February? If you want to have a sneaky look at more kitchens, check out the list on Celia’s blog, Fig Jam and Lime Cordial – thanks also to Celia for hosting In my kitchen every month. In January there were a record 50 kitchens to peek in!
Hi Mel. My fav with that much garlic is a good roasting for spreading on gorgeous bread. Put together Jamie Oliver’s Hit n Run Tray Baked Chicken last night (from Save With Jamie), and it would only be better with more baked garlic.
If you’re heading to Auckland, check out the restaurants at the Harbour (near the Viaduct Centre). Heaps to choose from, many varieties and absolutely lovely.
Waiheke Island is lovely, and you can get a day trip from Auckland that is a great day. Lovely olive oil farm and boutique brewery, but don’t make my mistake and pack the goodies in carry on 🙁
Ferry trip to Richmond is also lovely…quaint little seaside town, with beautiful old buildings, and some gorgeous little cafés and specialty stockists.
Thanks Cassandra – I’m making that tomorrow night too! Thanks for the idea. And also for all the NZ tips. Do you need a car on Waiheke Island or is it fairly easy to get around without one? Or should I do a tour? I’ll be on my own 🙁
I did a bus tour that was easy enough to book at the ferry terminal in Auckland (they have a great little tourist centre). There are a couple of different options available from memory.
Car would be better as you can stop and start wherever you want. I did see a few bicycles and mopeds, but its pretty hilly in places.
Hiya – so you’re off to NZ huh? I know you have a birthday coming up too. We’ll have to compare diaries so we can have you over for dinner. In the mean time…I must hunt the goat pies out. I bought some (frozen) goat from the Indian grocer at Cannon Hill and made a korma. It worked well. Cheers xx
I am and I do! And I’ll be in NZ then. Dinner would be great. Definitely keep an eye out for the goat pies. I have frozen the last one for a sneaky lunch next week 🙂
That’s a lovely kitchen stash … quite jealous of everything, frankly. Especially the trip to NZ. Happy travels.
Love the limes 😉 I would make pickled garlic out of some of those cloves, and maybe plant a few? Enjoy your trip to NZ 🙂
Goat pie, Mel!! And I love that you traded eggs for limes and mangoes – we have a bit of an egg glut at the moment, so maybe I need to put the word out. 🙂 Have a great time in NZ, and thanks for the headsup on the milk – regular milk doesn’t sit so well with me these days, so maybe I need to give this a go..
G’day! Loved Auckland as used to live there Mel, true!
How about 40 cloves of garlic chicken recipe…very yum and healthy too!
Thanks for this month’s kitchen view!
Cheers! Joanne
The goat pie looks good and lucky you to have proper milk.
Wish I could swap my hen and duck eggs for limes and mangoes. Have a great time in NZ.
