In my kitchen…
… are part of my bounty from our local farmers markets on the weekend – how beautiful are these tomatoes, peppers and beetroot. All grown by local farmers. I’m cooking the peppers tonight, and will stuff them with a ricotta and herb mix (I think!).
In my kitchen …
… are these gorgeous looking cucumbers my neighbour popped over with. I’m going to use a couple in some veggie juices and probably make a tatziki. What would you do with lots of cucumbers?
In my kitchen…
… are a couple of mum’s old cookbooks. I’ve not cooked from these, but they have been well loved judging by all the food splashes that adorn them! We lived in Adelaide from 1971-73 which is when I assume the Barossa book was acquired. What impresses me about the Barossa book is that this copy is the 23rd edition, and to date, 115,000 copies had been printed! THAT IS INSANE! And it has no pictures!
Ambrose Heath, the author of The Penguin Book of Sauces, was born in 1891. This book was printed posthumously in 1970 (he died in 1969). It is an incredibly comprehensive collection of sauce recipes (not all using tomato), and includes sauces, stocks and butters. A few of the more interesting are Bercy Butter (using poached beef marrow), Herring Butter (not sure about that), and a pickled walnut sauce. I think I’ll stick to the maple creams and sauces.
In my kitchen…
… is an extremely large and generous bag of crackers, snacks and fruit pastes sent to me by Tucker’s Natural. I get a lot of product sent by companies and PR firms, and I can safely say this is one of the most generous. Not only that, but the accompanying PR information was extremely comprehensive, as it had its own website!
In my kitchen…
… are a couple of Dello Mano chocolate brownies I discovered languishing at the back of the fridge this morning after I went there 10 days ago. 10 DAYS! Obviously hubby had also forgotten otherwise all I would have found would have been the empty wrappers! They will be dessert tonight.
In my kitchen…
… are two of these beautiful Villary and Boch bowls. I found these in the cupboard when I was packing up mum and dad’s kitchen a couple of years ago, and loved them at first sight. I found them again in my cupboard recently when I was looking for something else. I’ve used them a few times recently when serving salads, as the are the perfect size for a salad for two.

You have delightful things in your kitchen. I’d make pickles with those cukes. I love, love, love old cookbooks. Someone gave me an oldish CWA cookbook and I have the best time reading it. A teacup of something – are all teacups the same size?
Lovely peek into your kitchen!

I’d love a good recipe for pickles if you have one please Maureen – I discovered an addiction to them when we were in the US recently

Great IMK. I love that you have an old treasure of a cookbook in your kitchen. They are so much fun to explore.

I have loads of old books of mum’s – I really need to make more time to read and cook from them

Nice post, Mel. Love the cookbooks… and those plates. So special xo

they really are. Thanks Lizzy

The cookbooks look like real treasures! I have some of my mother;s books and although I already have the recipes memorized I still look through them to see her notes on the side of the pages.
Love the bowls- I guess I’m just into memories . 🙂
Thanks for sharing.

I have lots of things that provoke memories in my kitchen Heidi. My favourite is mum’s recipe folder that has her favourite recipes in it. It’s a real treasure.

Mel, those cookbooks are treasures, hard to believe the first one sold so many copies without pictures! How wonderful that your neighbour has cucumbers already – it’s still too cold down here to even plant them (the weather has been bizarre). Your market haul looks gloriously colourful, and the V&B set is so sweet! xx
Mel Kettle says
My cucumbers only have little flowers – and were planted WEEKS before hers! I have garden envy!
And those cookbook sales! How many authors today would love even 10% of those numbers?
Fiona @TIFFIN bite sized food adventures says
10 days. 10 days? Good Grief! The cucumbers are flourishing here. I don’t have a tip for using a bounty except to give them away and learn to pick small. I’m off to EDB soon so expect they’ll all be monsters in a week’s time.
Mel Kettle says
I know! I totally forgot – how slack is that! BTW did you see Dello Mano in the Courier Mail today? With a gorgeous pic too. My neighbour said she usually does pick small, but she was in Perth last week and was shocked when she saw what there was when she came home.
Fiona says
I picked everything I could before I cam to Perth but I see that you’re getting some rain at last so I guess when I get back there may be some giants in my garden too!

I wish I had some old cookbooks – my mum is refusing to pass on my grandmothers’ both sides. Lucky haul with the tuckers.
I’m yet to try Dello Mano chocolate brownies – I suspect they should have been on top ten food experiences to have in Brisbane post. http://www.gustoso.com.au/blog/review/top-ten-food-experiences-to-have-in-brisbane/
Mel Kettle says
Unfortunately I inherited my haul of gorgeous old cookbooks – many, many years before I was ready 🙁
But, my mum’s death was how I met Deb from Dello Mano, when she asked me if dad would like some brownies after hearing of the news via twitter. They are kind and beautiful people with a stunning product. Definitely worthy of inclusion on the top 10 list.

G’day Mel…what a unique kitchen view!
I LOVE that Barossa cookbook, about the sauce and your lovely plate too!
Cheers! Joanne
Mel Kettle says
thanks Joanne – I think the book is worthy of it’s own blog post, which I will get around to doing one day…

Where do I begin?! Stuffed peppers, old cookbooks, and gorgeous plates … ricotta and herbs, oh yes! I get lost in old cookbooks, the creaky and often thick pages. Beautiful plate, I’m a real fan of lemon anything. 🙂
tableofcolors says
Love old cook books, they contain so much of the culture of the era and is a history book in a practical way.
Jas@AbsolutelyJas says
Those veg have definitely caught my eye – what did you end up doing with the peppers? I’d demolish the cucumber on its own, cut into matchsticks and sprinkled with a little salt. Perfect!
Anne Wheaton says
Your vegetables are such beautiful colours. They just beg to be eaten. I wonder how much money the cookbook sales raised for the Tanunda Soldiers’ Memorial. Just googled it and read about the unveiling ceremony – very apt as we’ve just had Remembrance Sunday.

Old cookbooks are great, especially the food stained ones!
I would have a go at that walnut sauce 🙂
