In my September kitchen…
… is mushroom dust. Yesterday I went to the most fabulous lunch, hosted by the Mushroom Growers’ Association, at held at Brisbane cooking school The Golden Pig. We were served many morsels with mushroom, including dessert! Yep. Mushrooms in dessert – a beautiful (and very sweet) mushroom and iron bark honey panna cotta with oranges in ginger and saki syrup. As we left, we were given a goodie bag with mushroom delights, including this little jar of mushroom dust. I think I will use it to sprinkle on my scrambled eggs one morning.
Readers of The cook’s notebook will be well aware that I love mushrooms, and not just because a 100g serve (about 3 button mushrooms) provides more than 20% of the daily needs for six essential nutrients: riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, copper and selenium. And if that isn’t enough, three population studies show that women who eat an average of one button mushroom a day have half the risk of breast cancer than women who do not eat mushrooms. In my kitchen…
… are these cute little lemon and lime spritz-y gadgets. I’ve no idea what they are called, but you stick them in a lemon or a lime (or an orange, grapefruit etc) and squirt! Great for adding flavour to fish or chicken dishes. They come in two sizes, the small one is for limes and the one in the lemon is longer. LOVE. THEM. Big thanks to the lady at Williams-Sonoma in Atlanta who told me I would love them (I do!).
In my kitchen…
… is a big jar of nut butter. I’ve recently discovered how completely addictive this is, and how expensive it is to buy commercially. So, with power of my thermomix, I’ve been making my own. This combo has equal-ish amounts of almonds, brazil nuts and cashew nuts. And isn’t the jar gorgeous? It’s one of mum’s old Fowlers preserving jars.
In my kitchen…
… is a packet of sumac from Herbies. I’m a massive fan of all Herbies spices, and when I was asked if I wanted to sample the sumac I immediately said yes. It has a bit of a lemony flavour and I’ll be using it on some lamb cutlets later this week. While this was gifted to me, I have often bought Herbies products from my local fruit and veg store, as I’ve been a long time fan.
… is this nifty little packet of post-it notes. I am forever running out of these as I use them to mark up recipes in cookbooks and magazines that I want to try to create. I also fairly regularly give a pack of post-it’s to hubby and/or Mr13 and ask them to mark up a few recipes so I know there won’t be any argument at the dinner table 🙂
This box was given to me by Tourism and Events Queensland when they hosted me on a famil on the Gold Coast on the weekend (but more about that later…!).
In my kitchen…
… is this very groovy smoothie maker by Kambrook (it’s so new it’s not even on their website yet!). I was soooo excited to win this at the ProBlogger Event on the weekend. I had to tweet my favourite smoothie – after being in the US I decided it had to be the Georgia Peach Smoothie – fresh peaches, oranges, yogurt and of course a generous dollop of peach schnapps. Probably not for breakfast consumption! I’ve not had a chance to use this yet, but will give it a whirl soon.
And that’s my kitchen for September! I’d love to see what is in yours too 🙂

Your blog posts never disappoint Mel.
In my kitchen this month…lots of limes from the tree outside, the last of the season’s juicing oranges, cheap strawberries (which I froze), beautiful honey from my secret supplier in Gympie, fresh eggs from the chooks, the best bread ever from Uncle Bob’s Bakery and some new tupperware!
Mel Kettle says
that all sounds fabulous Anita! I might have to come over and grab a few of those limes. I paid $1.50 for 1 the other day. RIDICULOUS.

I love them Deb! That is one of the few kitchen gadgets that I don’t have, but I nearly bought some recently (I restrained myself 🙂 )

Oooh.. that smoothie maker looks amazing! Let us know if it works as well as it looks like it will – love that the bowl is the smoothie container.
Mel Kettle says
it’s pretty nifty isn’t it Jas! I still haven’t used it – must do soon.

Thank you for the health info on mushrooms, Mel — another good reason to eat them (as if I need a ‘reason’) — and the mushroom dust sounds totally intriguing. Your antique jar and nut butter are gorgeous. Have fun with your citrus “spritzers” (I don’t know what they’re called either) and post-it notes!

I also don’t need a reason to eat mushrooms Kim! Soooo yummy! I love those old jars – mum had heaps of them, and I keep trying to think of how to use them so they aren’t just collecting dust!

heh, wow. Great post! I am absolutely mad for mushrooms as well though I’ve never had mushroom dust. I visited our farmer’s market on the weekend and there is a really great mushroom stand that sells all sorts of kinds you can only get in the wild. They are expensive but worth it. Lobster mushrooms, bear tooth mushrooms (look like a spiky white bath sponge), black and yellow chanterelles. Just beautiful fungi.
I’ve always thought those citrus gadgets were a bust but apparently they do work 🙂
And…I’ve never seen that type of canning jar before. It’s really unique.
Everything on your post is interesting and that sounds like the perfect smoothie to me 😉
Can’t wait for October!!

Thanks Bernice! I’ve rarely seen fancy mushrooms here, but there were some AMAZING ones at the farmers’ markets in San Francisco, where the mushroom photo on the top banner of my blog was taken. Those lobster mushrooms are amazing. I was disappointed I couldn’t buy some to cook. I guess I’ll have to go back… 🙂

Hi Mel, I LOVE Herbie’s Spices as well – their original Rozelle store is quite close by. They have a high quality product, and their blends are amazing! The lemon/lime gadgets are a great idea, and your nut butter sounds and looks very, very good! x PS. How’re you going with getting through the Tabasco sauce? 😉
